Paste Markdown, download a .docx — with real Word heading styles, so the navigation pane and table of contents actually work.
Real Word heading styles, tables and lists — built in your browser.
Most ways of getting Markdown into Word produce something that only looks right. Paste the rendered output and the headings arrive as large bold text; Word does not know they are headings, so the navigation pane stays empty, Insert → Table of Contents finds nothing, and anyone who applies the company template watches the formatting come apart. This converter writes a genuine .docx in which a # becomes a paragraph styled Heading 1 — the same style Word itself applies — along with real tables, real bullets and numbering, and hyperlinks that keep their URLs. The file is assembled in your browser and never uploaded.
Paste your Markdown on the left. The document is rebuilt as you type.
The right pane previews what the Word file will contain, and the summary line under it counts the headings, paragraphs and tables.
Click .docx to download, then open it in Word, Google Docs, or Pages.
A developer has written a 12-page technical spec in Markdown, and the client will only review documents in Word with tracked changes. The fast route — render the Markdown, select all, paste into Word — puts twenty section titles in as bold 16pt text. The client opens the navigation pane to jump between sections and finds it empty, then asks for a table of contents, which Word cannot generate because there are no headings to collect. Converting here instead produces a .docx where each ## is a real Heading 2: the navigation pane fills in, Insert → Table of Contents builds the list in one click, and the requirements table arrives as a Word table with a shaded header row rather than tab-separated text. The client turns on tracked changes and starts commenting, which was the whole point.
“MD to DOCX”, “Markdown to DOCX” and “Markdown to Word” all end with the same file: a .docx that Word opens with real heading styles. What differs is what you are starting from.
The Markdown is in your editor, a chat reply or a README.
Paste it on the left and click .docx. Each # becomes a paragraph styled Heading 1, each ## a Heading 2, and tables, lists and links come across as real Word structure. The file is built in your browser.
You have a .md file on disk and want a .docx next to it.
The converter takes text rather than a file upload, so open the .md in any text editor (TextEdit, Notepad, VS Code), select all, copy and paste it here. The .docx you download is the same as if you had dropped the file.
The document has to end up in Google Docs, not Word.
Either upload the .docx to Google Drive and open it with Google Docs — the heading styles show up in its document outline — or skip the file and paste the Markdown into Docs with its formatting intact.
Paste Markdown into Google DocsYou have the .docx and need Markdown again.
Use the Word to Markdown converter. It reads the same heading styles this page writes, so a document that makes the round trip keeps its outline both ways.
Convert DOCX to MDBecause Word treats styles as structure, not decoration. The navigation pane, automatic tables of contents, cross-references, PDF bookmarks and every corporate template all key off the Heading 1/Heading 2 styles. Bold 16pt text looks identical on screen and does none of it. That is also why converting the file back to Markdown later recovers the outline — the information is genuinely in there.
They come across as monospaced paragraphs on a light grey background, one paragraph per line. Word has no code block construct and no syntax highlighting, so this is as close as the format allows — the code is intact and readable, just not coloured.
No. A Markdown image is a URL reference, and this converter does not fetch remote files — that would mean uploading your document to a server to do the fetching, which defeats the point. Each image is replaced with its alt text in brackets so you can see exactly where to drop the real picture in Word.
Yes. .docx is the format all of them read, and the heading styles map onto the equivalent styles in each — Google Docs will show the same outline in its own document outline pane.
The Word to Markdown page converts a .docx back, reading the same heading styles this page writes. A document that made the round trip keeps its outline in both directions.
