Markdown to Google Docs

Paste your Markdown here, hit copy, then paste into your doc — headings, lists, tables and links arrive formatted instead of as raw symbols.

Copies as rich text so a normal paste lands formatted in your doc.

Markdown

Need a link instead of a document?

Publish it as a page anyone can open — no account to start.

Google Docs has never read Markdown from a plain paste. Drop ## Overview into a doc and you get the literal hashes, which is why this is such a common search: the syntax survives, the formatting does not. The fix is not a file conversion at all. Docs already knows how to accept formatted content — it reads the text/html flavour of your clipboard and rebuilds its own headings, lists and tables from it. This page does exactly that one job: it renders your Markdown and puts the result on the clipboard as rich text, so the ordinary paste you were going to do anyway lands formatted. Nothing is uploaded and you do not have to connect a Google account.

How to paste Markdown into Google Docs

  1. 1.

Paste your Markdown into the left pane. The right pane shows exactly what will land in your document.

  2. 2.

Click Copy for Google Docs — this puts formatted rich text on your clipboard, not the raw symbols.

  3. 3.

Switch to your Google Doc and paste normally with ⌘V / Ctrl+V.

Ein echtes Beispiel

Someone asks an AI assistant to draft a quarterly plan and gets back tidy Markdown: an H1, three H2 sections, a numbered list of priorities, and a small table of owners and dates. Their team writes everything in Google Docs, so it has to go there for comments. Pasting straight from the chat window produces a document full of #, ** and pipe characters, and the table arrives as four unreadable lines — so the usual next step is twenty minutes of reapplying heading styles and rebuilding the table by hand. Instead they paste the Markdown here, click copy, and paste into the doc. The H1 becomes Title-styled text, each H2 becomes a real heading that shows up in the document outline, the numbered list stays numbered, and the table arrives as an actual Google Docs table with its header row. They add two comments and send it out before the meeting.

Pasting a ChatGPT reply into Google Docs

Click Copy under the ChatGPT reply, paste it into this page, then copy it into your doc. Here is what arrives, compared with pasting the raw Markdown straight in. The line people find after pasting is ChatGPT’s own section divider.

How to import Markdown into Google Docs

Google Docs can now read Markdown in two ways of its own, and this tool covers a third. Which one fits depends on whether your Markdown is a file or text you have just copied.

The Markdown is saved as a .md file on your computer or in Drive.

Import it directly: in Google Docs choose File, then Open, then Upload and pick the .md file, or upload it to Drive and use Open with Google Docs. Docs converts headings, lists, links and emphasis into its own formatting. You do not need this tool for a file.

Fragen zu Markdown to Google Docs

Do I need to connect my Google account?

No, and there is nothing to authorise. This tool never touches Google — it only writes to your own clipboard, and you do the paste yourself in whatever document you already have open. That also means it works for a doc in a personal account, a work account, or one you were only invited to comment on.

Which parts of Markdown survive the paste?

Headings, bold, italic, ordered and unordered lists, links, block quotes, inline code, code blocks, horizontal rules and tables all come across, because each has an obvious equivalent in a Google Doc. Task-list checkboxes paste as list items rather than checkboxes. Images referenced by URL do not come along — Docs will not fetch a remote image on paste, so add those in the document.

Why does the button say "copy" rather than "convert"?

Because copying is the actual mechanism, and knowing that helps. There is no Google Docs file being produced and nothing is uploaded anywhere; the formatting lives on the clipboard between the two apps. The same trick works for anywhere that accepts rich text — Word, Outlook, Slack’s message box, Notion.

Nothing formatted arrived when I pasted. What happened?

Two likely causes. Some browsers block clipboard access until you grant permission, and if that happens this page tells you rather than pretending it worked — you can select the preview on the right and copy it by hand. The other cause is pasting with Paste without formatting (⌘⇧V), which deliberately strips everything; use a plain ⌘V here.

Can I go the other way, from Google Docs to Markdown?

Download the doc as .docx from File → Download, then use the Word to Markdown converter — it reads Google’s exported heading styles the same way it reads Word’s.
