Chrome does not render Markdown by default. Open a .md file or click a raw Markdown link in Chrome and you will see a wall of asterisks, hashes, and brackets instead of formatted text. Most guides tell you to install a browser extension — but that is not always an option, and sometimes it is more friction than the task is worth.

dochost is a paste-and-link tool. Copy your Markdown, paste it in, and you get a clean rendered URL you can open in any browser, share with anyone, and read without touching Chrome’s settings or extension library.

Three steps to a readable Markdown page in Chrome

  1. 1.

Copy the raw Markdown text from GitHub, Slack, your filesystem, or anywhere else.

  2. 2.

Paste it into the dochost editor — or upload the .md file directly.

  3. 3.

Click Publish, copy the link, and open it in Chrome or send it to anyone who needs to read it.

Un ejemplo real

Devon is a product manager at a mid-sized logistics company. The team’s engineering lead dropped a raw GitHub link in Slack — a .md spec file covering the new carrier API. Devon clicked it. Chrome opened a page of unrendered Markdown: pound signs, double asterisks, backtick fences, and pipe-delimited tables with no formatting whatsoever.

The first instinct was to search for a Chrome Markdown viewer extension. Two popular ones turned up, but the company’s IT policy blocks installing extensions on managed laptops without a helpdesk ticket — a process that takes two to three business days. The spec review was scheduled for that afternoon.

Devon opened dochost, pasted the raw Markdown text from the GitHub page, and clicked Publish. dochost returned a clean rendered URL in about two seconds: headings were formatted, the code blocks were highlighted, and the tables were readable. Devon sent that link back into Slack so the rest of the team — including two colleagues on Safari and one on Firefox — could read the same rendered view without anyone needing any extension at all.

Preguntas sobre Chrome Markdown viewer

Why does Chrome show Markdown as raw text instead of rendering it?

Chrome is a general-purpose browser, not a document viewer. When it receives a file with a .md extension or a raw text response with no HTML, it has no built-in parser for Markdown syntax, so it displays the file exactly as stored — asterisks, hashes, brackets and all. This is the same reason a .csv opens as comma-separated plain text rather than a spreadsheet. Rendering Markdown requires a parser to convert the syntax into HTML, which Chrome itself does not include for .md files.

Do you need a Chrome extension to view Markdown, or is there an easier way?

Extensions work well if you control your browser and regularly read Markdown files locally. But they require installation permissions, they only help the person who installs them, and on managed or locked-down machines the option may not be available at all. A paste-to-link approach like dochost skips all of that: you paste the Markdown once, get a URL, and anyone with that link can read the rendered version in any browser — no extension on either end. For a one-off file or a shared read, that is usually simpler than an install.

Can I drag-and-drop or paste Markdown to view it, instead of installing anything?

Yes, and that is the core workflow dochost is built around. Open the tool, paste your raw Markdown text directly into the editor, and click Publish. You can also upload a .md file from your machine if copy-pasting from a long file feels awkward. Either way, dochost converts the Markdown to a rendered HTML page and gives you a shareable link. Nothing is installed on your computer or browser. The rendered page is accessible from any device with a browser.

Once my Markdown is rendered, can I send that rendered view to someone else?

Yes. Every page published on dochost gets its own URL. You copy that link and send it to whoever needs to read the document — they open it in any browser and see the rendered version, not the raw Markdown. Free pages are available for seven days, which covers most review cycles and one-off shares. If you need the link to stay live permanently — for documentation you reference repeatedly or share in public channels — that is a paid feature.
