Word documents already know their own structure: a line styled Heading 1 is genuinely a heading, not just bigger text. That is the part copy-and-paste throws away, which is why pasting a .docx into a Markdown editor gives you an undifferentiated wall with the formatting stripped. This converter reads the styles instead of the appearance: Mammoth maps Word’s style names onto real HTML elements, and Turndown turns those into GitHub-flavored Markdown. Headings come back as # and ##, tables as pipe tables, hyperlinks with their URLs, and bold and italic as ** and *. It runs in your browser, so the document never leaves your machine — which is the point when the file is a contract, a policy draft, or an unpublished report.
A team is moving its employee handbook out of a shared Word file and into the docs site, which builds from Markdown. The handbook is 40 pages: numbered sections, a benefits table, and links to internal forms. The person doing it starts by pasting a section into their editor and immediately sees the problem — the section titles arrive as ordinary sentences, the table arrives as tab-separated mush, and every link is now bare text with the URL gone. Dropping the file here instead gives them # and ## matching the document’s real outline, the benefits table as a pipe table with its header row, and each link as [form name](url). The notice tells them the four embedded screenshots could not come along, so they know to re-upload those to the docs site rather than discovering the gaps in review. What was a day of retyping becomes an hour of checking.
