Markdown reads well until it lands somewhere that does not render it. Paste a README or an AI chat reply into a form field, a text message, a plain-text email or a CMS box, and the reader gets **, ## and [links](https://…) scattered through the words. Renaming the file from .md to .txt — which is what most “MD to TXT” converters actually do — changes the extension and leaves every one of those characters in place.
This converter removes the syntax and keeps the meaning. Bold and italics become ordinary words. A link becomes its text with the address after it in brackets, so the URL is not lost. An engineer has written the release notes in Markdown for the repo, and now has to paste the same notes into the app store’s “What’s new” box, which shows plain text only. Pasted as-is, the store listing would show ## Fixes and **Important:** to every customer, and the link to the migration guide would appear as bracket soup.
Run through this converter, the headings become plain lines, the bold markers disappear, the numbered upgrade steps keep their numbers, and the guide link reads “migration guide (https://example.com/migrate)”. The engineer copies the right-hand pane into the store form without editing a single character.
Renaming changes the extension, not the content: a renamed file still contains every **, # and [text](url), and any program that opens it shows them. Converting removes that syntax and keeps the words and structure, which is what you need when the text is going somewhere that does not render Markdown.
A link becomes its text followed by the address in brackets — “the runbook (https://example.com/runbook)” — so a reader can still follow it. When the link text already is the address, it appears once. An image becomes its alt text, because plain text cannot show the picture and the alt text is what describes it.
As columns padded with spaces, with a dashed line under the header. The columns line up wherever every character is the same width: code editors, terminals, and most plain-text email. In a proportional font the spacing will drift, which no plain-text format can avoid. If the table needs to stay a real table, Markdown to HTML or Markdown to Excel keeps it as one.
Because without them a list is just lines, and “1. Back up the database 2. Run the migration” stops being an order of steps. Dashes and numbers are plain characters every text field shows correctly, so they stay; nested items keep their indentation, and task items keep [x] or [ ].
