Word to Markdown converter

Drop a .docx and get Markdown back — Word’s headings, tables, links and bold text carried over, not flattened into plain paste.

Converted in your browser — the file is never uploaded. 20MB limit.

Word documents already know their own structure: a line styled Heading 1 is genuinely a heading, not just bigger text. That is the part copy-and-paste throws away, which is why pasting a .docx into a Markdown editor gives you an undifferentiated wall with the formatting stripped. This converter reads the styles instead of the appearance: Mammoth maps Word’s style names onto real HTML elements, and Turndown turns those into GitHub-flavored Markdown. Headings come back as # and ##, tables as pipe tables, hyperlinks with their URLs, and bold and italic as ** and *. It runs in your browser, so the document never leaves your machine — which is the point when the file is a contract, a policy draft, or an unpublished report.

How Word to Markdown works

  1. 1.

Drop your .docx onto the panel above, or click to browse — the file is read locally and never uploaded.

  2. 2.

Word’s styles are mapped to structure: Heading 1 becomes #, tables become pipe tables, and the first row becomes the header row that Markdown tables require.

  3. 3.

Copy the Markdown, download the .md file, or publish it as a page you can share by link.

実際の例

A team is moving its employee handbook out of a shared Word file and into the docs site, which builds from Markdown. The handbook is 40 pages: numbered sections, a benefits table, and links to internal forms. The person doing it starts by pasting a section into their editor and immediately sees the problem — the section titles arrive as ordinary sentences, the table arrives as tab-separated mush, and every link is now bare text with the URL gone. Dropping the file here instead gives them # and ## matching the document’s real outline, the benefits table as a pipe table with its header row, and each link as [form name](url). The notice tells them the four embedded screenshots could not come along, so they know to re-upload those to the docs site rather than discovering the gaps in review. What was a day of retyping becomes an hour of checking.

DOCX to MD, Word to MD — same conversion

“DOCX to MD”, “Word to MD” and “Word to Markdown” are one job: a Word document goes in, a .md file comes out. What changes is the file you are holding.

You have a modern Word file and want it as Markdown.

Drop it on the panel above. Heading styles become # and ##, tables become pipe tables and links keep their URLs. Copy the result or download it as a .md file; the document is read in your browser and never uploaded.

Word to Markdownについてのよくある質問

Why does this keep headings when copy-and-paste does not?

Because it reads the file, not the rendering. A .docx is a zip of XML in which each paragraph names the style applied to it, so a heading is labelled as one. Copying to the clipboard discards that and hands the editor plain text with some visual formatting. This converter opens the archive and maps the style names, which is why the outline survives. The corollary: if whoever wrote the document made headings by manually bolding and enlarging text rather than applying a heading style, there is nothing to read, and those lines come back as bold paragraphs.

What happens to images in the document?

They are dropped, and the page tells you how many. Word stores images inside the document file; Markdown has no way to embed one — it can only point at an image hosted somewhere by URL. Rather than dumping enormous base64 blobs into your text, the converter removes them and reports the count, so you know exactly how many you need to re-add wherever the Markdown ends up.

It says my file is a .doc, not a .docx — what is the difference?

They are unrelated formats that share a name. The modern .docx is a zip archive of XML, readable by any tool. The older .doc from Word 97-2003 is a binary format that browser-side tools cannot open. Open the file in Word, Google Docs, or LibreOffice and use Save As to produce a .docx, then convert that.

Are tracked changes and comments included?

No. You get the document as it currently reads with changes accepted — comments, revision marks and their authors are not part of the output. That is usually what you want when publishing, but it does mean the Markdown is not a record of the editing history. If you need that, keep the original .docx.

Can I get a link instead of a file?

Yes. Publish turns the converted Markdown into a hosted page with its own URL, rendered properly, which is easier to send to someone than a .md file most people cannot open. Free links last seven days; paid plans keep them permanently.
